How To Select A Good Book
- Check the cover. Does the dust jacket catch your eye?
- Read the summary on the inside flap, or on the back cover. Does the book sound like something you would enjoy? Read the first page.
- Look at the illustrations. Do they appeal to you?
- Look at the displays, and check out the books on top of the bookshelves. They are all Teacher Ruth recommendations.
- Look at what your friends are reading. Ask them for recommendations.
- Think about books that your teachers may have shared. Would you like to reread a favorite?
- Read other books written by your favorite authors.
- Read about things you're interested in, or things you want to know more about.
- Ask Teacher Ruth for suggestions.

How To Keep Your Books Happy
- Carry your books to and from school in your bookbag.
- No eating or drinking while reading.
- Keep books away from baby sister or brother.
- Keep books away from pets.
- Pick one spot in your home to store library books. Put your book back into your bookbag as soon as you are done with it.
- Make sure your hands are clean whenever reading.
- Treat your books gently- they are NOT toys.
- Return your book on time so that others may enjoy it.

The Five Finger Test, or Is This book On My Reading Level?
- Open the book to a full page of text.
- Read the page.
- Put up one finger for every word you don't know.
- If you get five (5) fingers up, the book is too hard for you to read on your own and enjoy.
