  • How To Select A Good Book

  1. Check the cover. Does the dust jacket catch your eye?
  2. Read the summary on the inside flap, or on the back cover. Does the book sound like something you would enjoy? Read the first page.
  3. Look at the illustrations. Do they appeal to you?
  4. Look at the displays, and check out the books on top of the bookshelves. They are all Teacher Ruth recommendations.
  5. Look at what your friends are reading. Ask them for recommendations.
  6. Think about books that your teachers may have shared. Would you like to reread a favorite?
  7. Read other books written by your favorite authors.
  8. Read about things you're interested in, or things you want to know more about.
  9. Ask Teacher Ruth for suggestions.

  • How To Keep Your Books Happy

  1. Carry your books to and from school in your bookbag.
  2. No eating or drinking while reading.
  3. Keep books away from baby sister or brother.
  4. Keep books away from pets.
  5. Pick one spot in your home to store library books. Put your book back into your bookbag as soon as you are done with it.
  6. Make sure your hands are clean whenever reading.
  7. Treat your books gently- they are NOT toys.
  8. Return your book on time so that others may enjoy it.

  • The Five Finger Test, or Is This book On My Reading Level?

  1. Open the book to a full page of text.
  2. Read the page.
  3. Put up one finger for every word you don't know.
  4. If you get five (5) fingers up, the book is too hard for you to read on your own and enjoy.
